The ‘Peace’ Treaty Among Guns
The Defense Minister was sitting in the gigantic white-walled cabin, and Mister President of the ‘rival’ country was assembled opposite to him. In the recent past, their faiths and communities had been in a clash along with their relevant countries. The Defense Minister could lately be seen in a multitude of news feeds due to his terror and massacres, but at the moment, he appeared as calm as Summer Sea.
Stuck to the walls were not paintings, but a few soldiers with their mistrust evident as guns in their hands.
“I’ve been called here to sign a Peace Treaty, I believe.” said Mister President, after scrutinizing the vigilant militia, who was ready to execute him, on suspecting him underhanded.
“Sure.” agreed The Defense Minister, without any ghost of a smile, while sliding a file over to Mister President.
“So, we are negotiating for peace in the presence of more than 20 arms.” Mister President proclaimed, almost giggling at the paradox. The Defense Minister totally overlooked his remark.
Shaking his leg, he edgily waited for the formalities to be fulfilled by Mister President.
“I have a few discrepancies with it. Can I point them out for you?” interrogated Mister President, reverently.
“As always! Your community agrees to disagree with us forever!” shrieked The Defense Minister. “I was told to present to you this folder in case you wanted alterations, and see, how handy it is for me!”
However, Mister President didn’t lose his calm.
Providing him with the folder, The Defense Minister explained, “It has a draft treaty, and a few ruled sheets within it. The draft can be used for indicating deletion of clauses and the ruled sheets are for listing down the modifications and additions.”
Mister President expressed gratitude towards him, and made use of the folder.
For several hours, he was busy amending the Treaty according to his will, and The Defense Minister couldn’t help but silently stay, as he was ordered for the same.
“Okay, I’m through!” declared Mister President, dropping down the pen. “Thanks, Sir, for your endurance, and if your Madam President is of the same mind as mine, I will be waiting for her to revise and authorize the Treaty.”
Then, he chose to leave. However, the guards still seem to be watchful.
Mister President wasn’t greeted before his departure as the Defense Minister didn’t want any tranquility with the citizens of another faith. His wisdom was clouded by his adamant habit of degrading other communities, as he always had a presumption of them being against his community.
In spite of it all, he smiled to himself, viewing the future to see his Madam President in rage at the arisen voice and the call for adjustments.
Gathering up the papers from his desk, he walked rapidly towards Madam President’s cabin, recalling some statements made by Mister President, and thinking about how it could work against him.
Clearing his throat, he knocked his knuckles on the door of Madam President’s cabin.
“Yes? You may enter.” she called out from within. The Defense Minister obeyed, and thanked her for the permission.
She turned her head up from her work, to see him.
Then, looking back towards the papers in front of her, she said, “Minister, please, take a seat.”
While doing so, The Defense Minister informed, “Ma’am, Mister President wants some alterations in the Peace Treaty.”
“What are they?” she said upon hearing the news, while putting aside her paperwork.
The Defense Minister handed over the required file to Madam President, and started making up some words in his mind that might break her trust on the ‘rival’ community.
She got busy with the papers at once, while, he gave her a minute to read them before talking to her about his meeting with Mister President. However, when he spoke the first word, Madam President indicated him with her hand to stop right there!
She had an astonished expression on her face. When the Defense Minister had asked why, she spoke nothing but knew that he hadn’t read the amendments yet.
When The Defense Minister was handed over the papers, he became bewildered too.
The first clause of the Draft Treaty was a promise to not bombard each others country in the future, and it was struck off. So was the second clause, which guaranteed that both the countries will pay each other for the damage of property and life caused by them.
Even the subsequent clauses were cut off, which pledged friendly negotiations.
The Defense Minister thought that his work had been done already by Mister President.
“I had told you, ma’am! There was no point shaking hands with them! They are going to be like this always!” said he, trying to add fuel to fire.
“Before you rant, Minister, read the proposed clauses.” Madam President ordered The Defense Minister, and he did as he was instructed to do.
The first clause, proposed by Mister President read that both the countries will teach their school students to be in friendly terms with all the fellow countries.
The second said that the adults would retain the unbiased culture which they had acquired during their childhood.
The third one called out for their mutual trust.
The fourth one demanded their promises to help each other .
The fifth requested for both the nations to exchange and respect each others cultures.
The sixth clause said that they would ultimately work for global peace.
And, the Treaty was complete.
The Defense Minister got his lips sealed after reading the suggestion for the treaty.
Madam President discussed the matter further with him.
After an hour, The Defense Minister walked out to the cabin to telephone Mister President.
“May I talk to Mister President?” he said over the device, and waited while, his call was being transferred to him.
“Sir, I’m the Defense Minister, and would like to tell you that Madam President and I have mutually approved of all your amendments.” He informed him “She says that your Treaty comprises of the basic guidelines to maintain world peace, and no hollow promises of any Peace Treaty can match them. Your ideas are brimming with reverences and the culture of living together. Madam President is more than willing to sign it, and requests you to sanction it too, as soon as possible.”
Then, he smiled after a pause, because the date of the Peace Treaty was not far off.
And, another step to global peace was already taken!
